CAD Documents: Writing Policy and SOPs

Getting your penal code, SOPs, and training material onto the CAD where people can actually find them.

Documents are the CAD's built-in place for anything written down that people need to find again — penal code, SOPs, training material, whatever your community keeps on paper (or would, if paper were still a thing).

Writing one

Anyone with the Documents Edit permission can hit New document from the Documents screen. Give it a title and write the body out — plain text, not markdown. Line breaks are kept exactly as typed, but things like bold text or headings won't render as formatting; they'll just show up as the literal characters you typed. Keep that in mind if you're pasting something written somewhere else that used markdown-style formatting.

Who can see it

Three options, picked when you write it:

  • Everyone in the community — the default, visible to any member.
  • One department only — pick which one. Only that department's members (and staff) can read it.
  • Supervisors and up — staff-only.

Pinning

Tick "Pin to the top" and it sorts above everything else on the list — use it for whatever people need to find fastest, the actual penal code being the obvious candidate.

A real limitation, worth knowing up front

There's currently no Edit button in the interface — once a document's written, the only way to change it is delete it and write it again. If you're drafting something that's going to need revisions, it might be worth keeping the real source somewhere else (a doc, a notes app) until it's settled, then publishing the final version here.
